Here are two examples of sunk relief, used by Ancient Egyptian sculptors to decorate their buildings with what were often colossal images of deities and royal figures. Both of these stones are modern works by SG Tyson.
- The first is in a beautifully striated sandstone, copied from the Temple at Edfu, Egypt.
- Next is the Pharaoh Akhenaten and his family worshiping the Aten or solar deity. As was the case in ancient Egypt, the direction of light was crucial to the effectiveness of this type of relief work.
